Thoughts on a Wine Cellar by Henry Goulding

Henry Goulding was a lawyer with a nose – a nose for life and a nose for wine.

When he tasted his way into the 1993 Sunday Telegraph wine-tasting grand final, he began seriously laying down wines for the future.  And when he realised that he wasn’t to going to be able to enjoy that future with his beloved family and legions of friends, he wrote this brave and beautiful book which elegantly links his cellar to those he adored.  It also gives everyone the chance to appreciate a wonderful and much-missed man.

We are hoping that this book will raise money in Henry’s memory for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.  If you would like to make any further donation this can be done via our Just Giving page.

Henry and his love of wine are the guiding hands behind Top Note Design.  We based many of our original designs on capsules from his extensive collection.  He gave us advice on what he felt were the must-have wine accessories and we set about sourcing them.

Henry’s love of wine and his extensive jottings on the wines he enjoyed and memories they evoked are the inspiration behind our latest project, The Wine Record Book. You can use this link to find out more or even order a copy.

Burgundy is complicated; it is that simple.  So, to better understand a region of 25 villages, 116 appellations and over 4,500 growers, where do you start?  You start with a wine merchant (negociants), such as Louis Latour, who buy the tiny outputs of myriad growers, iron out their idiosyncracies and, via the quality guarantee of their own label, introduce the world to the wines that have moved princes and pauper alike to raptures that claret can only dream of.Original giclée print on fine art paper. 30cm x 30cm  - £145. Along with Chapoutier, one of the grand old names of the Rhone, as comfortably at home in the North as in the South.  Now owned by the Bordelais, will the wildness of the Rhone yield to the polish of the Médoc?  Opinion remains divided, as much to its likelihood as to the benefits of such a move.Original giclée print on fine art paper.
