Why keep a wine journal?  It is more than just a record of the wine you drink.  You can use your wine record book to teach yourself about wine.   A wine record will give a focus and format to your note taking.  This will help you to approach each wine that you taste in structured way.   Using a wine journal will allow you to consider each aspect of the wine and to compare one wine with another over a period of time.  You can you use your journal to actually analyse the wine and to give it a rating.  Remember this is matter of your taste.  There are not right or wrong answers, even top wine critics sometimes disagree as everyone has different taste.

There quite a few things to think about when you approach a wine in this way.  Firstly, what does the wine look like.  Think about the colour.  Is the wine cloudy or clear?  Then, allow yourself to smell the wine.  Take your time and consider the different aromas you are able to identify.  They could be primary aromas such as fruit or flowers.  There could be secondary aromas which come from the wine making process.
