As all wine lovers know, once a cork is extracted from a wine bottle, the wine starts to become stale as soon as it reacts with the air, and it is hard to seal a bottle back up again sufficiently with the original cork – and this is where wine bottle stoppers (also known as wine preserver, bottle sealer or wine saver) come in, acting as the cork would have previously done.

Good wine stoppers allow you to go back and drink an already opened bottle of wine, by preventing unwanted air and sediment from gaining contact with the wine, which could cause it to go off and lose its flavour. Wine stored with a stopper in the fridge keeps fresh for a few days. For best results, store the wine upright to minimise the surface area exposed to oxygen.

Vacuum Systems

Blanket Systems

The second type of wine preservation system is a blanket system. This relies on using an inert gas, such as argon. This gas is heavier than oxygen so when it is pumped into the bottle it sinks forming a layer over the wine. The gas doesn’t harm the wine at all. These systems really do work to keep wine fresh some for weeks or even months, but they don’t come in at less than approximately £200 for basic models.
