Description

This Limited Edition Print Châteauneuf-du-Pape features our design based on the capsules of our favourite wines.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the best-known wine-producing areas in the world.  Situated in the Southern Rhone it is famous for full-bodied red wines but there is a lot more to the appellation than its famous reds.

The Romans planted the first vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.   Winegrowing is in the history of this region.  The actual name Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from the time when the Pope moved to Avignon in the early 14th Century. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is translated to mean ‘The Pope’s New Castle’  You will find the emblem of the papal coat of arms of the city of Avignon on every bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.   You can imagine how excited we were to find a wine capsule featuring just this image, the two crossed key of St Peter.

Grape Varieties

Growers need to follow certain rules if they are to sell wines under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.  Firstly, their vineyards have to fall within the designated geographical area.  Secondly, only 15 different grape varieties are allowed to planted in the appellation.   Grenache is the most used grape variety in the region with vines planted in over 70% of vineyards.  Every estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape plants this grape in over 50% of its fields and some only make wine from this grape.   However, winemakers often blend Syrah and Mourvedre with Grenache to add to the complexity of the wine.

White wine grapes allowed in the region are Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Roussannne, Picpoul and Picardan.  They cover nearly 7% of the field and the white wines are 6-7% of the production.
